This paper aims to highlight common mistakes that people can make when they step into leadership positions and the potential consequences that stem from these mistakes. By analysing these pitfalls and their long-term effects, this paper provides practical suggestions to guide emerging leaders towards more successful leadership journeys.

Stepping into a leadership role can be an exciting and transformative experience. However, without the proper preparation and awareness, new leaders may inadvertently make mistakes that hinder their effectiveness and limit their future growth. This paper focuses on the challenges faced by women entering leadership positions and provides valuable insights to navigate their early stages of leadership with confidence.

Common Mistakes and Consequences

Neglecting self-confidence and self-advocacy: A common mistake is downplaying your accomplishments and failing to assert yourself. This can limit your opportunities and reduce the confidence you have in your decision-making abilities. Take for example, a newly appointed female manager who fails to negotiate for a fair salary based on her skills and experience. She then receives an inequitable salary compared to her male counterparts!

Lack of assertiveness and failure to set boundaries: Having a tendency to avoid confrontation or uncomfortable situations can lead to ineffective communication, suboptimal teamwork and blurred lines of responsibility and accountability. A team leader who avoids addressing underperformance issues will contribute to the long-term underperformance of the team, leading to a decline in team morale, productivity and a failure to meet targets.

Neglecting self-care and work-life balance: Saying Yes all the time and showing excessive dedication to work will likely lead to burnout, impacting both your personal well-being and professional performance. If you're sacrificing your wellbeing because you don't know how to set appropriate boundaries, then the quality of your personal life will decline and you'll end up experiencing chronic stress and exhaustion. This will also leave your team feeling unsupported.

Strategies for Success

Cultivate self-confidence and self-advocacy: Acknowledge your achievements, recognize your strengths and take pride in your abilities. It's a good idea to be aware of your key strengths so that you can use them to your advantage. This will also help you identify any gaps that need to be bridged so that you can do so. Embrace as many opportunities as you can to showcase your skills and expertise. Seek support from mentors and build networks for guidance and encouragement.

Develop assertiveness and effective communication skills: Learn to navigate difficult conversations and express concerns openly but respectfully. Many organisations are now running training on how to effectively give and receive feedback or hold difficult conversations. Be clear when setting expectations and encourage open dialogue so that your team and stakeholders know exactly what you represent. Also practise active listening to develop your skills on empathy, inclusion and collaboration.

Prioritize self-care and establish work-life balance: Recognize the importance of personal well-being and establish boundaries between work and personal life. It is important to set these boundaries in place at the outset so that you can prevent rather than treat the issue. Learn to delegate tasks, manage your time effectively and cultivate hobbies and interests outside of work. When you're working, take regular breaks and seek out connections from your network so that you can learn and share experiences to develop best practice.

Stepping into a leadership role presents a unique set of challenges, particularly for women. By acknowledging common mistakes and their potential consequences, you can proactively navigate your leadership journey more effectively. Developing self-confidence, assertiveness, and work-life balance are essential components of successful leadership. By leveraging these strategies, women can thrive in their roles, inspire and motivate their teams, and achieve long-term success for their business.

As organisations strive for diversity and inclusivity, addressing these challenges and supporting emerging leaders will lead to stronger, more resilient teams and leaders who can create more impact in their communities.
