As we continue the pursuit of gender equality, in terms of both gender pay and gender confidence, it is important to recognise and address some of the barriers for women in the workplace. One key factor that can significantly impact the career trajectory of women is sponsorship. Organisations that actively foster a culture of sponsorship have the opportunity to empower aspiring and established women leaders, enabling them to grow and progress in their careers, while having the opportunity to influence change. Along with the added benefit of being able to support and be role models to other aspiring female leaders. I'm a big believer in the power of the ripple effect. In this article, I explore the consequences of a lack of sponsorship for female employees and the positive outcomes that come from having sponsors in organisations.
What are some of the consequences of a lack of Sponsorship?
Without sponsorship, many talented and driven women face considerable challenges in advancing their careers. Coaching and mentoring, while equally important, leave it up to the individual to then find opportunities for progression. The absence of sponsorship often leads to a limited network of advocates, making it difficult for women to gain visibility and recognition for their achievements. As a result, they may be overlooked for key assignments, promotions and leadership roles, potentially even holding back from putting their hands up for progression.
When women don't see other women in leadership positions, it can diminish their own aspirations and limit their belief in their own potential. This absence of representation reinforces gender stereotypes and discourages talented women from pursuing their professional goals, further reducing the quality and diversity of the workforce.
Let’s now look at some of the ways Sponsorship can benefit an organisation and its employees.
Enhanced Career Opportunities: Sponsorship provides women with access to high-profile assignments, strategic projects and opportunities for professional development. Sponsors are typically influential individuals within the organisation and can use their influence to advocate for aspiring leaders, opening doors that might otherwise remain closed.
Increased Visibility and Recognition: Sponsors play a crucial role in promoting the visibility of aspiring female leaders. By actively endorsing their accomplishments and contributions, sponsors help to position women as influential and impactful leaders within their organisations.
Expanded Networks: Sponsorship facilitates the expansion of professional networks for women. Sponsors often introduce aspiring women leaders to influential individuals who can provide valuable guidance, mentorship and career opportunities.
Breaking Stereotypes and Inspiring Change: Effective sponsorship challenges and disrupts gender stereotypes. When women are actively sponsored and given the opportunity to excel, it removes preconceived notions about their abilities and leadership potential. This inspires other female employees to aim higher and pursue their aspirations, creating a ripple effect that benefits the organisation and the individuals.
Sponsorship of female employees is incredibly important for achieving gender equality and promoting women's leadership within organisations. By recognising the consequences of the lack of sponsorship and understanding the positive outcomes that come with sponsorship, organisations can create a workplace environment that empowers women to reach their full potential. Through sponsorship, aspiring and established women leaders gain the necessary support, opportunities and visibility to advance, influence change and serve as role models for future generations of aspiring women leaders.
